BigMoose has big ideas
Based in Cardiff, BigMoose is a charity and non-profit coffee shop founded by father and daughter team Jeff and Chloe Smith. They are passionate about making the world a better place and work tirelessly to help people struggling with their mental health, prevent suicide and homelessness (you can read more about their work here and their story here).
As well as running mental health awareness sessions, they offer free and discounted therapy sessions which are delivered by HG therapist Graeme Layzell.
They have been hugely impressed with the HG therapy that Graeme has provided, and the impact it's had on those he has helped – particularly when 5 people told them after lockdown 2020 that without bigmoose's intervention they would have ended their lives.
Concerned that more and more people are struggling and people are waiting too long for the help they need, they were determined to do something on a bigger scale – and that the human givens approach to therapy was the way to go.
As a result they have recently launched Project 1 million which aims to raise £1,000,000 in order to provide early and timely interventions for people, including HG therapy (via the HGI's professional nationwide register), and training for businesses to better support their teams.
You can read more about the project here, including how to donate, and we'll keep you updated on their progress – if you'd like to get involved, you can contact them here.
HG training coming to LEEDS
At HG College we've been endeavouring to make our training more widely available, both with the development of our live online workshops, and the addition this year of a new venue in Leeds, which we hope will make it easier for anyone living in the north of the UK to attend our Diploma-linked workshops.
Red Poppy Company looking for buyer
Red Poppy has been operating in the workplace for 20 years providing counselling, training and trauma management. It was started by Keith and Nicola Guy, who have long advocated the HG approach to treating trauma.
As Keith says: "We use HG therapists whenever we possibly can because HG is highly effective. We have been very successful because employers have seen the benefits of this approach. However, we have now decided to retire and are looking to sell Red Poppy, ideally we would like the company to be taken over by a HG therapist/s. If you are interested and would like to know more, please contact us on 07736 724124."
HG Foundation - charity
There are four organisations in the HG Group, the College, which is the source of all HG training, including the Diploma, the HGI, which is the professional body of HG therapists, HG Publishing and the lesser known HG Foundation – a charity which was set up to fund research into the efficacy of HG, as well as to help spread information about the approach and help improve mental health generally through a variety of different projects.
Over the years the Foundation has played a significant role, including helping to get PTSD Resolution off the ground (read more), funding research projects and creating the Free Depression web-based App, UpLift - which has been very well received in the USA and the UK: "Absolutely brilliant ... what a gift to humanity."
Supporting GPs to help patients suffering depression
Another major project, which has been funded from monies generously donated to the Foundation by the Corbin family in memory of their daughter Pippa, has been to help GPs deliver fast and effective treatment to depressed patients. To date, Dr Andrew Morrice (pictured) a GP, HG practitioner and HG tutor, has delivered 13 training presentations to GP groups across the country, with some 200 GPs and other health care professionals receiving training. During 2021, Dr Morrice was able to deliver two online training sessions to an additional 72 GPs and other health care professionals and as ever received great feedback: 47.2% rated the event 'Outstanding' and 45.3% as 'Excellent'. Below are just some of the quotes from GPs:
“So refreshing to actually be given a clear set of skills and tools to use in these really difficult consultations. Has made me excited and keen to use this.”
“Amazing. The best teaching session I have ever had! This is going to completely change my approach to patients and I plan to use many of the resources personally too.”
“This was such a refreshing way to learn about depression and how we can truly help our patients in a truly useful and sustainable way. "

Don't forget your own wellbeing
On her new video, tutor Emily Gajewski explains why it's so important that all caring professionals know how to protect themselves from becoming overwhelmed and 'burnt out' – sadly an all too common occurrence among those helping and supporting others...
