Martin is a qualified counselling psychologist and social worker. As well as offering therapy through his own private practice, he also manages the NOVA Trauma Support Service, which is part of the Barnardos organisation. This service has treated hundreds of psychologically traumatised people since 1998. He has also contributed to several books and had articles published in various journals.
